I have to be honest. Berlin was not where I wanted to go in Europe. Everything that you read is that it is an upcoming hip city. The place to go! Everything that I did not want. I wanted history, old world not new! If I wanted new I could see it here in the states. Why go to Europe. Let me tell you about the Berlin that we saw.

How far back in time would you like to go? Did you ever wonder what it would be like to live in 1274? In a town surrounded by a wall and a river to keep you safe. In November we visited Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. It is located in the district of Ansbach of Mittelfranken, the Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. It is a very touristy little place with the tour buses coming in the morning and departing in the afternoon. I might also add it is not the easiest place to get too. However it is well worth your time and trouble, you will not be disappointed! To get to this wonderful little town by train you will need to change trains a couple of times. Most of our train changes you have to go downstairs and back up again on the other side. They do have these wonderful pulleys that you put your bag on and you walk up the stairs and you bag comes along so much easier. Once we arrived in Rothenburg ob der Tauber (meaning Rothenburg on the Tauber River) we looked around. In the guide books it states that the inner town has cobbled streets. Keep that in mind should you be staying in the inner town and deciding to walk to your accommodations. We were staying within so we opted for a Taxi, which was around 10 Euro's before tip. Because it is a walled town the streets are very narrow and they taxi's do have to do work around the narrow streets, one ways and the entrances. It is not like Chicago where taxi drivers purposely go a different route to increase the rate. The biggest decision that you will have is where to stay. When we were there we stayed at Gastehaus Edith. If you can guess by the name you might consider similar to a B&B. The Taxi took us and called them because we arrived earlier than we expected. Our room was at the top of the house. Which meant a lot of stairs with our luggage. However the view was amazing! If you should decide to go to Rothenburg ob der Tauber check out what is going on, if the town is sleeping, etc. We arrived the Wednesday before the Christmas Market opened on Friday. What we found we that the town actually was shutting down in the evening for a little R&R. Not knowing this we visited the museum which I high recommend and then a shop to pick out the perfect sword for my son. Two hours later there was only one restaurant open for the night. We had dinner and walked around the darken streets imagining that it was in the medieval times. When we went back to our room we looked out over the town again picturing it as it was days gone by. We highly recommend this quaint small town. Even the 18 year old liked it. |
